CHAPTER V CLASS PROCEDURE HE following lesson outlines are merely sugges tive and teachers should use them as models only and vary the items to suit individual classes. However, a lesson program similar to the one suggested should be placed on the blackboard at every lesson and the teacher should follow it. The class is organized, the pupils are all from the third grade or higher and have paid for a term of ten lessons in advance. In this description we will take a class that uses two pianos. One child sits at each piano and at his left side stands another child ready to beat time on his shoulder and take his place at the piano at a signal. There is a book on each piano, and on each desk there is a keyboard (described in Chapter VIII). Propped against each book-rest (described in Chapter VIII) is a copy of the same book that is on each piano. The pupils should begin the piano work by using a simple song book--the simpler the better, any song primer that is used in the second or third grade will do. The class numbers sixteen, twelve are seated at the desks. Half the pupils are assigned to each piano and seated in a row nearest the instrument they are to use, leaving a vacant row of seats between the two rows of children, so that the passing to and from the pianos will not be so apt to displace the keyboards. Where classes assemble in kindergarten rooms the tables may be used as illustrated below. It may seem superfluous to go so minutely into details, but it is very important in any work to have the tools handy so that time be not wasted; and with so many in the class every second must be put to a good use, for an hour is not a very long period.
